Investigators believe that gunfire erupted after they were approached by Joshua Coulter, 23, a recent a acquaintance, said Sgt. Jim Toomey, a Glendale police spokesman.

For reasons that remain to be determined, an argument apparently ensued and the younger Claywell was shot, Toomey said. The teen later died at a Phoenix hospital, he added.

About two hours later, Coulter was arrested at his nearby home in the 8400 block of North 54th Lane, Toomey said.

Coulter, who is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, was booked in a Maricopa County jail on a charge of first-degree murder, authorities said.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for next Monday in Superior Court.
