Kart Harford


A man who admitted he shot and killed a Ball State University student was sentenced Friday to 85 years in prison.

Damien Sanders, 23, pleaded guilty in January to murder and armed robbery in connection with the March 2004 death of Karl  Harford.
Authorities said Harford, 20, of Carmel, was robbed by Sanders and two other people after Harford offered them a ride home from an off-campus party. Sanders testified in January that he shot Harford during the robbery.The robbery netted Harford's attackers only $2, police said.Harford's body was found later that day in a car in an alley on Muncie's east side, about two miles from BSU's campus, police said.

One of the other suspects in the case, Brandon L. Patterson, was 18 at the time of the attack. He has pleaded not guilty to murder charges and is scheduled to stand trial in May.

A third suspect, who was 14 at the time of the attack, also was arrested. A trial date hasn't been set for him.

Brandon L. Patterson, 18, and a 14-year-old male were arrested in connection with the case March 8. Patterson is charged with murder and armed robbery, and the 14-year-old is charged with assisting a criminal.
